Holiday Ale is a Biere de Noel, an offshoot of the Biere de Garde style. Traditionally this style was made by just a handful of small farmhouse breweries in France during the few weeks leading up to Christmas. It has a deep malt flavor with notes of treacle, toasted malt, and caramel. The malt character is accented by a mild herbal presence of French Strisselspalt and Aramis hops.

To paraphrase another RBian, you wrote the book on this style, perhaps you need to return to it. Dirty, grimy, earthy, medicinal-herbal malts dominate. Poor malt structure.

Bottle from JRs. Pour is clear orange brown with a big creamy foamy head. Smells fresh, a little malty and chlorinated. First let me say this is not a biere degarde, its actually a spiced veggie some what holiday beer. Taste is quite malty with a tad of spices added to it. Yes, in the middle it gets a little more spice but then in the end it mellows. Goes malty towards the finish. Not as rude as many spiced holiday ales but it is in the border of rudeness I would have expected. To say this is in the same style as Beaver Biere de Garde, Beaver French Teamaker De Garde, Jolly Pumpkin Bière de Mars, Beaver French Strisselspalt,or even Off Color Le Woof, is freaking stupid, its not those kinds of degardes.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - deep amber to copper. Nice fluffy head. Nose - pecan, chewy nut thing. Praline, but more savoury. Taste - more chewy toffee and hazelnuts this time. It's a Snickers. Palate - creamy medium body. Fairly balanced on the finish in terms of sweetness and bitterness. Overall - has elements of Scotch ale and Belgian Dubbel. I do like this.

Draught at MBCC. Red Session. Cloudy brown coloured body, filmy-layer, scattered lacing. Caramel and dried fruits on the nose. Blended taste of caramel, nuts and marmalade offset by a mid-dry, bittersweet ending. Fine bodied. Decent stuff. (Copenhagen 13.05.2017).
