Just in time as these animals are headed for extinction. The Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund has partnered with the Wynkoop Brewing Company and have handcrafted an award winning private label beer, which is calling “Silverback Smoked Porter”. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each pint will go to support the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mountain gorillas are the closest link to mankind and they are on the verge of extinction. With estimated 720 animals left in the world and none are in captivity, MGCF needs your help. Silverback Smoked Porter, a traditional dark brew, will be available July 1st, at the following locations; Wynkoop Brewing Company, Cherry Cricket, Wazee Supper Club, Pearl Street Grill, Phantom Canyon Brewing Company, Gaetano’s Italian and Goosetown Tavern.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Mild chocolate aroma. Flavor is dark malt and mild chocolate. If it’s smoked, I’m insensitive today. Finishes mildly bitter.

cask at the brewpub - Pours dark brown and smells of smoke and roast malt. It has a smooth, sweet, smoky roast malt flavor. I think it’s just a little too light on flavor, but still good. It’s medium bodied this being the cask version, lightly carbonated.

Sample at the brewpub. This brew pours brownish-black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma has a rather smoked character with malt and hops underneath. Medium body with smoked malt, coffee and hops flavors. The finish is strong smoke with some espresso left over. Overall, this beer doesn’t strike a good balance with the smokiness like the best in the style do (as in Alaskan). Still, it was alright.
