Our friends of Chris Robinson Brotherhood released their new album “Phosphorescent Harvest” and kicked off their U.S. tour in the SF Bay Area earlier this spring. To celebrate, we tapped the first keg of our Brotherhood Steam Beer, a Golden State Collaboration of handcrafted California tunes and handcrafted California brews.
Inspired by the brewing tradition of our flagship, Anchor Steam® Beer, Brotherhood Steam Beer is brewed with its own unique recipe. A distinct malt bill gives the beer its copper color, and dry-hopping with Citra and Nelson Sauvin hops adds aromatic hints of citrus and mint. The result is a smooth, full-bodied malt flavor with a lingering, fresh hop finish.
A long-standing English brewery tradition is to designate their beers, “Ordinary”, “Best or Special”, and “Extra Special Bitter” (ESB) to note beers of increasing strength.
In the spirit of that tradition, we like to think of Brotherhood Steam Beer as an Extra Special Lager (ESL), aka “The Gig Beer” – an easy drinking brew from the first set to encore. This collaborative brew will be tapped at music venues across the US to celebrate the Brotherhood’s new album.

Can from Oddbins Beer Shop, Blackheath. Copper coloured pour with a white head. Lots of toffee, caramel and pear drops in the aroma which segues nicely into the flavour with some nutty notes creeping through. Nice.

Can from Freshfields Market, Croydon. It pours hazy deep amber with a medium white head. The nose is clean, toasty grain, fresh bread and cereal. The taste is crisp, clean, bitter, bread, toasty grain, cereal, pepper, biscuit and hint of lemon peel with a dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Not a whole lot to it, but it is well-rounded and rather drinkable. Decent.

Can from Fresh Fields in Croydon. Pours amber and was a little lively. Bready and malty on the nose. Tastes of malt, caramel and bread and is a touch earthy. It’s decent stuff but not an earth shatterer.

Can from Cornelius. Clear amber body with a thin off-white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of tea, musty biscuit and floral hops. Flavour of orange pith, caramel and lightly roasted malt. Thin to medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Not as hoppy as I hoped it would be but a decent beer all the same.

Can shared at a tasting at Stas’s place. Better Beer Of The Month Club. Clear copper with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, a bit of cardboard, a bit of honey, stale hops. Sweetish malty flavor, with a bit of caramel, a honey note, and a bitter hoppy finish. Medium-bodied.
