Hannen was an own brewery until sold to Oettinger in 2005. Hannen was then owned by Carlsberg and brewed at Brauerei Königshof, Krefeld. In 2022 the brand was sold to Privatbrauerei Bolten, Korschebroich, where it's brewed since then.

50cl bottle shared with my wife on 8th Jan 2013: poured into designer ’Hannen Alt’ glasses. I am old enough to remember when the head brewer left Hannen to join Diebels Alt and the problems Hannen had afterwards: took them a long time to recover. Anyway: back to this bottle. Can’t believe I’ve not had a bottle for so long. Nice bright chestnut brown body with a full, deep head of off-white foam on top. The nose is malty: brown bread and yeasty with a few mixed nuts thrown in. Taste wise it follows the aromas: malts, nuts and bread yeasts lead the way with some dark fruits making a weak bid to get in on the act. The beer seems full bodied and flavoursome, becoming slightly drier towards the end of each sip: I’ve missed this beer.

500ml bottle. Pours dark caramel brown with a large, frothy head. Aroma is bready and dark fruity malt. Taste is bready to start with a hint of spice. More bread on the finish, which is also a little soapy.

33cl bottle. Poured a brown beer with light beige head of good formation but quickly diminishes. Aroma is to toasted malts, dry fruits and slightly caramel. Flavour is toasty, where brown fruits are also present. The final results moderate bittery and dry. Carbonation is medium. Body is light to medium.

On tap at Biermuseum Köln. Amber with a lasting white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, cereal. Sweet and malty flavour with a bit of hops., though not enough to quite balance the sweetness.

Beautiful dark amber to mahogany color, with a nice creamy head. The aroma is quite terrible, with metal, puke, sugar. Almost total absence of body, with a very light, dry caramel flavor and a rather metallic finish. Disaster.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Bottle at Dusseldorf Airport! Dark beer - distinctively sharp and quite bitter. Alright but not as smooth as some Alts.
