This beer pours an opaque (at least in relatively low light), dark brown with a fine beige head that puffs up well and leaves good lacing. The nose is refined brown sugar, malt and good fruitiness of the plum/nectarine variety. I prefer the aroma to the flavor, which adds in a relatively strong phenol note. Feel is smooth and fairly creamy. The drinkability is high because it’s really an excellent beer to pair with food. It’s a strong, relatively unique flavor that doesn’t dominate the palate.

On tap at Bouchon, Beverly Hills. Pours with a deep brown body and a lasting off-white head with good lace. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, cocoa and earth. Taste was a little closed at first (a bit too cold), but opened with a light spice, tons of malt and some chocolate. Definitely a beer to go with food, and benefited from warming up. Medium carbonation and a velvety finish.

Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa. Dark brown ruby color with a frothy beige head. Aroma is mixed chocolate/caramel. Medium plus body with really frothy carbonation. Flavor is pretty much chocolate. Oh there’s caramel and strange spicey stuff, and hop notes, but it’s up front chocolate. Not sayin it’s the best ever, but it’s really good!

Bottle at French Laundry. Paired head to head with a Borolo for a pork belly with avocado mouse and lots of truffles. Brownish beer with a nice tan head. yeasty, malty, light spice aroma. yeasty, malty, light roast flavor. Medium body. LIngering light roast, caramel, light spice. The beer did better cutting through the richness of the pork belly, but the wine was the better sipper on its own that night which was pretty much the gareement of all 10 of us at the table.
