Inspired by Battle Axe Butte southeast of Phoenix, this beer tastes as rugged as its namesake. The base of this beer is a high gravity Imperial Stout with oats, lactose sugar from the United Dairymen of Arizona and Medjool Dates from Steadfast Farm. We then aged this huge stout in Laphroaig barrels for a few months.

Sample at MBCC 2017. Almost black with a small head. Both aroma and taste dominated by smoke and peat, almost like an Islay Whisky. Not a bad one but almost too much smoke.

750ml thanks, shared at the 2017 RIS tasting. Wrapping up the with this one, breaking from the sweet, candy flavors to more smoky, roast malts that favor the Scotch barrel aging. Smoky roast malts, woody aroma. Taste is also squarely focused on the roast malts, slight ashy notes, and the nice boozy background from the barrels.
