Inspired by Battle Axe Butte southeast of Phoenix, this beer tastes as rugged as its namesake. The base of this beer is a high gravity Imperial Stout with oats, lactose sugar from the United Dairymen of Arizona and Medjool Dates from Steadfast Farm. We then aged this huge stout in Laphroaig barrels for a few months.

Bottle at the 10th Boise Imperial Stout Tasting. Deep dark brown pour with a moderate brown head. Immediate aroma is strong with the smoky peat and barrel influence. Wow, it is huge. Lots of peat and smoke in the taste, a little woody. Heavy roasted malt base and just a tiny bit of sweetness. I liked it, but a small dose is plenty.

Poured up on tap at the brewpub where it exhibits a deep dark body that supports a thin dark tan head. The aroma offers up inviting peaty Scotch, some chocolate, dark roasted malts, more rubber wrapped peaty smoke and then a molasses note. The taste is similar with yummy levels of chocolate and then some dark roasted malts, firm smoky peatiness and a light sense of dark fruity sweetness. Just a great sipper with plenty of beer to barrel treatment balance creating a smooth experience.
