800th anniversary, eh? yikes, that's old. So I walked into the beer store, something I don't do much of anymore, sadly. I wanted a Belgian style. I realized it earlier that day, I hadn't had a real Belgian beer in a long time. So long I don't even really remember. Sure I've had some sours and other funky things but outside of the occasional Orval, none of the classic fruity complex yeasty Belgians. I'd grown rather tired of them, and I figured now was a time to end that and reconsider. It that sense it hit the spot. I'm reminded of how back in the old days of ratebeer, people would say context is everything and that any beer is a 5.0 in the right context. I want to think that was good old Mike Maynard but I dunno, maybe not, but its too late to ask him now. What I know is that despite this not having great ratings, it was good to me, but I'm not giving it a 5. Well despite my rambling, let's get down to it. Golden, foamy fluffy head, got cloudy once I got down to the yeast in this big bottle. Nose was fruity for sure, very light banana but more apple, doughy yeast, straw, maybe bubblegum. Grassiness? It's almost hoppy and I see it was dry hopped so that's interesting. Flavor pretty similar featuring mostly the apple/pear yeastiness. I really like how the final yeast pour smoothed out the mouthfeel. I started a little too cold but as it came around to a good drinking temp, it really started to shine, balancing the esters with yeastiness and light hopping. On the whole I'd say a solid representation of an abbey style pale ale. I'm certainly pleased with it, and glad I chose this to end my streak of belgian-free drinking days.

Many thanks for this Abbey beer to Jacek Wigier (wineofdreams@gmil.com). 800 Ans...Hmm sporo czasu.

Bottle from BIAB. It pours lightly hazy bright gold with a thick, pillow head. The aroma is fresh, fragrant, oily, candied citrus peel, grapefruit, touch of melon and pear, doughy bread and cereal. The taste is firmly dry, bright fruity character, perfumed citrus, pithy lemon, grapefruit, pear skin, apple, melon, grass, toasty grain and straw with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate to high, foamy carbonation. Works well.

From the bottle. Yellow with frothy to creamy white head that lasts the duration. Notable lemon lime in the aroma—like a Sprite. Hints of bubblegum sweetness. Taste is very mildly bitter, just a touch tart, enveloped though by a subtle candy-like sweetness. Don’t look and you’ll miss it though. Not a big, bold taste but one that demands attention. Medium, moderate to mild carbonation. Well rounded. Nice!
