Every now and then we get the urge to plunder the riches of traditional Scottish beer-making in search of liquid gold. Obviously this traditional Scottish export ale is more copper than gold but you get the idea.

Lowlander is a tribute to this hallowed beer style and unsurprisingly, it’s the malts that take centre stage with layers and layers of complexity... toasty, sticky dried fruit and luscious caramel are all intertwined with just a gentle hop resin coming through in the background.

Dark, dark copper with a creamy, white head. Big toffee aroma, earthy, full of berry undertones, predominantly cherry. Taste is mildly bitter the whole way through, with slightly chalky, mineral-like overtones covering a rich, sweet malty body. Medium bodied, slightly oily, dry. Great character for the current 4.4%

Cask at Beer Shop Folkestone. Near black beer lasting tan head. Some maltiness. Some light chocolate flavour. Decent condition. Not much hop. Light fruitiness which is plum and damson. OK.

Can from Tempest webshoppe. It pours clear deep mahogany brown with a decent fluffy yellowy - white head. The aroma is toasty, brown bread, malt loaf, bitter - sweet character, dried fruits, fruit cake, splash of cola and caramel. The taste is bitter - sweet, toasty, brown bread, malt loaf, touch of coffee/cacao, dried fruits, raisin, fruit cake, cola, Dr Pepper, ryvita and a touch of spice with a dry, toasty brown bread finish. Average body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Flavourful and rounded. Nice take on a trad style.

440ml can. Opalescent, chestnut colour with ruby shimmer and average, thick, dense, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white head. Mellow, minimally nutty, malty and yeasty fruity aroma, notes of red and blue berries, a touch of plum butter, whiffs of cherry. Taste is minimally toasty and nutty malty, minimally floral and fruity hoppy, hints of hazelnut, chestnut, a touch of red and blue berries, plum butter, subtle residual sweetness; slightly dry, minimally floral finish.
Oily-watery texture, smooth and soft, minimally greasy, simultaneously slightly dry palate, fine, soft, dense, creamy carbonation.
Sweet-ish and fruity in the nose, rather dry and floral taste, quite punchy for its low abv - not bad.

Can ordered from Left Field Beer. Aroma combines berries and sweet chewy malts. Opaque chestnut Foamy off-white head thins out. Flavourwise we have makes, grains. Berry edge. It gains a real bitter streak as it develops... resin and liqourice. Underlying caramel and doughy. Chewy, aye. Medium bodied. Slick. Verging on oily. Soft-average carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Enjoyable modern take.
