Tontine is a contemporary North East milk stout brewed using both chocolate and crystal malts which gives this a distinctive black colour. The roasted aroma and flavour are complemented by a gentle sweet aftertaste obtained from natural milk sugars.

Cask at the Woodmans Rest, Shirley, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is creamy caramel sweet malt. The flavour is medium bitter light sweet with an earthy mineral malt light medicinal palate. A decent stout but I expected more sweetness and I suspect the keg was coming to the end of its life.

Cask @ Ship Ashore, Willen. Dark brown with a quickly dissipating beige head. Coffee, crystal malt and black pepper. Taste is burnt espresso bitter with a bitter finish and finish. Unwelcome bitter/sour aftertaste. Watery palette. I’m not crazy about this, as much as I want to support Cameron’s in their new beers.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - almost opaque black with a nice creamy head. Nose - creamy chocolate leading into a dry malt finish. Taste - more of the same. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish considering the style. Overall - good beer.
