We brewed this “Red IPA” to have a deep colour and a hoppy head of citrus and tropical fruits. We should note that a Red IPA has a more moderate bitterness than your usual West Coast-style IPA – we consider it more like a shot in the arm than a fist in the face. Our Pacific IPA gets its characteristic bitterness from the Pacific Jade, while the late kettle additions of Motueka and Wai-iti taunt your senses with tangerine and citrus. The malt base is also much heavier with biscuit and toffee tones and at 6.4% the ABV is what we have come to expect from any good IPA. Inspired by the duality of the dark Northern winter and the lively Southern summer, we reckon this Red IPA is equally good any time of year.

Bottle. Light hazy deep copper liquid with medium to huge light tan head. Aroma of pine, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, citrus and bread. Very malty. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter with notes of caramel, toast and pine. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Much better carb than the previous NKB beers I’ve had. Not technically bad, no real off flavours and not astringent, but malty IPAs just feel very outplayed and 90s. An IPA should be all about hops, not caramel malt.

Bottled (thanks omhper!). Ambery/pale copper colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits, mild wooden and toasted notes. Flavour is floral big time bitterness, which turns into sweetish malts and some slight nectary sweetness, before going quite bitter earthy and grassy again.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Cloudy amber, rich head. Peach, tangerina and caramel up front. Sweetish with medium body and rounded, somewhat oily mouthfeel. Caramel and toffee dominates, some honey and peach manages to seep through. Oily caramel and resin in a mid bitter finish. Caramelly IPAs isn’t exactly my favourite thing.

Bottle from Systembolaget, e-order in July 2015. Slightly hazy dark golden/light amber with a large head. On the sweet side with caramel, malt, some dried fruit and biscuits. I wonder where the hops went?

Draught (Adelsö Ölfestival 2015) - Amber/light copper in colour. Toffee, pine, peach and grapefruit feature in both the aroma and the taste. Quite nicely balanced.
