Can from Pilot. Thick dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, some liquorice. The liquorice is more prominent in the flavour, with plenty of salt

Can from Cornelius. Black body with a thin beige. Faint lacing. Aroma of raisin, chocolate brownie, prune and blueberry. Flavour of sea salt and dark chocolate. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Rich and full flavoured with a nice salty edge.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - blackberry, light smoke and salt and going into salted liquorice. Taste - creamy chocolate, this time. Still blackberry and black jack sweets. Palate - medium bodied at least. Creamy texture. Dry, roasted finish. Overall - lovely stuff.

Opaque beer, lively brown head that quickly fizzles out. Strong smell of earthy malt with a little anise and salt. Those last two flavours come through more sharply in the flavour, with the salt up front and the liquorice blending in with the rich malt and dark chocolate that's in there too. Rich and smooth with a lovely balance even for somebody like me who's not a big fan of anise. Good stuff.
