Just as Patrick Henry once stood addressing the city of Richmond in 1775 to spur resistance against the tyrannical British Empire, 20 years ago we were stirred to join the cry for resistance against the tyrannical oppression of industrial beer. And now, the opening of our Richmond brewery is yet another shot in the salvo that has been fired on behalf of American brewing independence. If we wish to brew free, if we mean to retain our identity and preserve the privilege of access to independent craft beer, we must recognize it is a group effort. We do not stand alone. And so, on our new brewing grounds, we gathered with fellow craft breweries and “His Excellency,” Governor McAuliffe, to join together in force. A group cry of freedom & independence! Consider this aggressively hopped imperial IPA, jam-packed with Virginia raspberries and blackberries, a testament to our passion and unwillingness to settle or sell out! We think Patrick Henry would be proud, and hope you will be too.

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Tan head with medium retention recedes to coat surface. Licorice and berry aromas. Sticky with dark resin, bark and chocolate upfront turning to mild berry before turning to earthy bitter leaves in the lasting finish.

22oz bottle from the local Trader Joe’s. Poured a kind of dark amber orange color with a small white head. Aroma was light berry notes, but mostly heavy on the malts. Some mild herbal notes, light resin. Flavor is really muted right out of the fridge. When it’s warmed up a bit, the raspberries come through a little more. Not bad, but not overwhelming. The Stout version that I had a little bit ago was better.

Bomber from Bine & Vine. Pours dark transclucent copper with a beige head. Aroma of pine and some red berry. Med + body. Flavor is malty, pine and a touch of red berry. More malty pine than anything. Not very dry, and rather bitter. Typically strong flavors. Really making me think imperial amber a bit. It has taken a long time, but I finally got a definite taste of blackberry. Good stuff, but maltier than expected.

22 oz. bottle. Color is a brown / murky ruby color. Aroma is berries mixed with danky hops. Citrus hints.

The flavor has the standard Stone Pine and citrus hop profile with notes of berries in the finish. I will also say the ABV is not exactly hidden. It is good but just another fruit infused IPA with noticeable alcohol. Good but I am not buying more before it is gone.

Bottle: Cloudy brown with a small tan head. Grapefruit, a hint of berry, caramel scent. Peppery, piney hops...quite bitter....grapefruit-peel, caramel malt. Really not a noticeable berry note in the flavour. Abundantly bitter, but nothing else really stands out in this one.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/31/2017. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy reddish orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, berries, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, light caramel, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops, berries, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, berries, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, pine, light caramel, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, berries, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, lightly toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops, berries, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance; a bit of increasing hop astringency after the finish, but not overwhelming. Moderate dryness from bitterness, quickly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous/rindy, and fairly grainy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden, only a mild warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an awesome fruited DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops, berries, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV; and despite the aggressively bitter/drying finish. Was expecting more berry presence initially; but what was there complimented the very dank, piney, citrus, and tropical notes from the hops really well. No associated fruit tartness at all. Solid malt backbone without being sweet. A really enjoyable offering.

On tap at Stone Escondido, pours a cloudy maroon with a medium beige head. Aroma is huge on the dank, herbal and resinous hops upfront, with very minor notice of the berries. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of dank resinous hops, and just enough bready caramel malt to back. No real hint of the berries. Despite this, it's an excellent IIPA.
