1902

Siphon Brewing in Michelbeke, West Flanders, Belgium 🇧🇪

  Belgian Style - Tripel Regular
Score
6.61
ABV: 8.5% IBU: 40 Ticks: 33
It’s the year the restaurant opened, frequented initially by fishermen who spent their days—not angling the rivers—but inside the Siphon, drinking beer. 1902 is a classic Belgian style—a golden Tripel of 8.5% ABV—but with a twist of honey and lavender. The addition of honey accentuates the rich nectar-like maltiness of the beer, and the distinct aromas of the lavender compliment both the floral, earthy hop profile and the banana-esque, apricot yeast flavours. Water: damme Malts: pils, munich, wheat, oat flakes Hops: challenger, cascade Yeast: belgian abbey Other: honey, lavender, candi sugar EBC: 10 IBU: 40

Goudkleurig bier met mooie schuimkraag. Smaak is bitterzoet en licht kruidig met iets van appel, wat honing en wat kruiden. OK.

Gott.

29 June 2019. At Siphon 3d Birthday Party, Damme. Cheers to Anke, Erwin & Ama Deke! Clear golden-orange with a lasting, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of dried banana, canned peach, apricot, pineapple slice, white bread & sugar, weird hint of sugared white tea - almost Ice Tea. Taste is medium fruity sweet, lots of ripe apricot & banana resting on a honey-like & bready malty base, creating a 'white' sugary effect even, with only slight touches of yeast, bitter pepper & grass providing a bit of balance. Dryish, floral hoppy finish, a bit peppery, yeasty again, lingering honey & ripe fruit & some warming gin-like alcohol. Medium body, slick-syrupy texture, soft carbonation. I think the honey does more than accentuating here, in combination with the rich 'yeasty' fruitiness the result is a very sweet Tripel. Distinct, yes, but too sweet for its own good.

Bottle picked up from Dranken Vande Woude, Pervijze-Diksmuide, Belgium consumed at home, Attenkirchen, Bavaria, Saturday 6th April 2019 after a 7hr 30min First Aid Course. Pours hazy amber with a little fine yeast particles in suspension. Very fragrant (perfume) aroma, I'm guessing that I am picking up lavender. The perfume comes through in the mouth, and to a lesser extent so does the honey. Good but not great.
