Bottled. Pretty much black colour, with a mediumsized white head. Aroma is dried fruits, some liquorice, alcohol and mild burnt sugary notes. Flavour is liquorice, dark sugar, some alcohol along with some mild coffee tones. Toffeeish aftertaste along with mild alcohol and some sweet fruitiness.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, black colour, a thin layer of beige bubbles on top. Sweaty, resinous, hoppy aroma, fruity hints of dark berries, bramble, blackcurrant, dark malty background with a minimally chocolately touch, some liquorice, whiffs of cherry. Taste is dry, bitter, fruity hoppy, roasty dark malty, hints of dark berries, bramble, blackcurrant, a crumbly, ashy touch, subtle hints of treacle though without any sweetness. Well hidden alcohol - hard stuff nevertheless.

Bottle from Inn At Home, Guildford. Bitter aroma, almost medicinal. Soy sauce, liquorice, stewed fruit. A glossy dark... almost black. Creamy but thin beige head. Heavy bitter - salt liquorice all the way. Develops some sweetness into the finish. In fact it reminds of Finnish salt liquorice liquor. This also applies to the palate: full bodied and thick. Average carbonation. Bitter finish. Satisfying warmth to the throat. Would really go down well on a cold winter night, but is pretty good on a warm summer night.

Bottle from Stuu66. Appearance - dark brown with a lovely fawn head. Nose - molasses and chocolate biscuits. Taste - more of the same. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - good barley wine but a bit like a stout.
