12 oz. bottle, $1.90 @ Binny’s, May ’09. I’d say enough with the brown ales already, but now people will be looking for a replacement for Goose Island Hex Nut. This one pours very dark, almost like a porters, with a matching tan head. Smell is good and malty, a small amount of roastiness, and some ale fruit esters. Hint of mocha, too. Taste keeps some milk chocolate going up my nose, while my tongue finds sweet malts, a bit of tart cherry and strawberry. I said sweet, right, as in not dry? Much different than other brown ales I’ve had lately. Nothing off to indicate the bottle has been sitting too long. A small note of hop complement, but otherwise keeps up a sweetness that suggests this could be boiled down to a nice sauce.

Roasted chestnut nose, with brown sugar notes. Clear brown, no head. Full body. Excessively sweet roasted malt flavor, ending in bark. Coffee appears when warm. Alcohol is magnified. The sweetness simply does not work in this brown ale. Blech.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma was bitter and roasty with moderate floral hops and a touch of smoke. The flavor was smoky and very roasty with light notes of coffee and chicory. th finish was long, dry , roasty and smoky. medium body. Average.

On tap. Poured a deep clear brown with a tan head. Aroma was full of malty notes (hay, bread, nuts and roasted notes). The same malt notes were strong in the flavor with a hint of raisins lying underneath.

12oz bottle. Dark amber brown color, looks filtered in its caramel translucence. Soft vanilla-edged brown sugar aroma. Somewhat Porter-like when served ice cold, but as it grows closer to room temp it becomes a really nice, mellow brown ale. Thick specialty malt residue coats your mouth after each sip. Fresh, non diacetyl caramel and brown sugar flavors. Middle of the road and subtle, but quite a good beer.

Overall Impression: This was a decent winter warmer-style brown ale, but I just didn't think it worked quite right. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but maybe there is a bit too much going on here, so the brew was a bit convoluted? Maybe a bit too sweet? Not exactly sure, it's just decent though.

Bottle. $1.80 at Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours brown with a large fluffy tan head. Aroma os sweet caramel and maple. Way too tart flavor... tastes like sour apples... nearly undrinkable. Bad bottle?

bottle - Pours medium brown with a one finger head. It has a mild, nutty caramel malt aroma. The flavor is of caramel malt with some off tasting sourness in the background that makes me think there’s a hint of infection. It looks like "screigh" below got some with a worse infection. At any rate, the sourness was only hinted at in my bottle, but the beer was light and lacking in flavor. It was drinkable, but not much more.

Bottle at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 11/24/2008. Dark black body with ruby highlights and a small off-white head. Sweet roast, caramel, chocolate and toffee aroma. Sweet chocolate and roast flavor with some light caramel. Medium body wtih mdoerate carbonation.
