Dark, brooding and robust, all should bow their heads before the humble porter. Often misunderstood and misappropriated, the real porter is a thing of simple beauty. In its element, the sense of satisfaction you get form a full bodied, roasted coffee, malty chocolatey stout is unparalleled. Respect the elements.

Bottle shared on the train to Siren - thanks to Paul. Pours deep brown with a frothy tan head. Nice meaty roasty malt aroma, char, cocoa. Medium sweet flavorbwith some burnt marshmallow, raisin, burnt wood, chocolate. Medium bodied with fine carboantion. Nice ashy roast in the finish, pleasantly rounded cocoa, moderate earthy bitterness. Good stuff overall.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Called Elemental Dark Ale. Appearance - opaque black with a decent creamy head. Nose - light chocolate but more raisins. Light brown sugar. Taste - dark chocolate and sugar again. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly balanced finish. Overall - a decent porter.

Craft - Clerkenwell. Opaque dark brown beer, little pale tan head. Smooth palate with mild fine carbonation. Smooth and mellow dark malt. Mild minerals. A nice touch of generic fruit adds complexity and rounds things off nicely. Smooth finish. Decent.

Cask @ Caley, Edinburgh [060313]
Very dark brown, some light through, thin tan head, some lacing
Aroma of roasted malt, bit woody smoke
Taste of roasted malts, bitter roast, some woody smoke, dark malts
Palate - Medium body, fairly smooth, some oiliness. Finish of roasted malts, soft smoke, some sweet dark malts, bitter hops and bitter roast, hint of chocolate, slightly dry
Overall - Not that keen on the smokiness and a bit bitter for me for a stout

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, dark chocolate, dark bread and liquorice. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness and a decent coffee bitterness. Well balanced and very tasty. Nice porter.
