A crafted dark beer without the associated dry finish of a stout. Caramel and toffee notes from a blend of roasted malts combine with the heavily hopped flavour of a traditional IPA.

Keg @ Jerusalem Tavern, London. Black with a very thin off-white creamy head. Its dark and roasted malts are arguably dominant over its tropical fruit notes expected in this style, but they’re not top much so. It’s a fairly tasty balance in reality.

Almost clear but very dark brown beer, thin tan head. Palate is smooth, mildly dry and has modest carbonation. Decent dark malts here, light but fairly rich. Mild roast and a little dark chocolate. Modest dark fruits. The smooth finish brings strong floral bitterness which just about earns it it’s CDA credentials. Mellow coffee linger. Decent.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Black colour with a minimal dark tan head. Aroma of malts, dark fruits, plum, raisin, chocolate, caramel, roast, coffee. Taste follows suit, bittersweet with a rich malty fruity flavour, and bitter notes from chocolate, coffee and of course the hops, you do notice the alcohol a little too. The IPA part of this is definitely the British style rather than American. Very smooth drinking beer with a slick mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Pours a dark brown color, almost black, topped with a fairly small head, coffee cream color and not really lasting. Malty aroma with some sweet fruity notes in the front, slight coffee presence. Taste defined by medium bitterness, come coffee feel but gentle. Lasting bittery aftertaste, lingering on your tongue for quite some time. Medium light. Not bad.

Keg at the Jerusalem, 21/04/16. Light black, reddish hues when held to the light, topped with a decent tan head. Nose is light roast, a touch farty, toffee, faint pine, earthy berry linger. Taste comprises bitter fruits, charr, light peppery spice, baking powder, light cocoa sprinkle. Medium bodied, spritzy/prickly carbonation, drying close with an earthy hop coating. Ok ... but not one I’d return to ... Over carbonated.
