Winterhook is Redhook’s legendary winter ale, brewed annually since 1984. Crafted with an evolving mix of malts and hops, each yearly edition of Winterhook is one-of-a-kind. This year’s incarnation crafted by header brewer Nick Crandall is a Hoppy Dark Lager, combining the hops of a dank IPA, the malt of a brown ale, and yeast profile of a bock.

Bottle. Very strong pine/cedar resin aroma - hard to detect anything else. Clear medium amber color with small head. Moderate malt and strong hops flavor with really only a hint of the pine - from the aroma, I was afraid it would taste like Pinesol. Very interesting how it has such a strong pine aroma but it doesn’t come out much in the flavor.

Bottle poured a clear tarnished copper. Aroma of bread, citrus and very piney, almost like a cleaning solvent. Bready flavour with malt and spice. Hoppy flavour with a metallic tang. This doesn’t remind me of any English strong ales.

12 oz bottle stating 6% ABV. Nice copper color with frothy off white head. Great lacing. Light malty aroma with some cinnamon and a bit of hops. The flavor sports a full caramel maltiness backed up by a grapefruit hop bite. Hidden between the malts and hops are hints of nutmeg and cinnamon.

Bottle: Reddish brown color with a smaller head. Aroma is very light, bready with some spice. Taste is malt with a hint of spice, some metallic notes and a dry finish. Not what I expect of an English Strong Ale...

12 oz. bottled on 11/22/05. Poured into a weizen glass, cause I thought this’d be a spiced ale. Gah! But there’s a lovely grainy malt smell upon opening, such a break from the two skunky import lagers I had before this rating. Deep brown ale color when poured, nicely filtered, under a bit of a rocky, thick head. I can taste brown bread & honey malts upfront, but immediately following is our old friend the Pacific hop load. Citrus and pine in harmony with winter strength caramel malts. It’s a pleasing combination. No harsh alcohol burn adds the pleasure of this nice drink.

Pours a deep amber color with a nice fluffy head that lasted. Had an aroma of malts and hops with some citrus as well. Tasted of roasted malts with some slight caramel as wellt. Finished with a mellow hop bitterness. Pretty decent.

I have never been a big fan of this brewer but as I had never had this particular beer before I grabbed one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark mahogany color with a small dark tan head. The aroma is sour malt with an unpleasant off scent. The flavor is reasonably strong with caramel and has a flowery hop presence. The caramel and a hint of sour nut linger on the finish.

Pour is a dark red with a small white head. Aroma is hoppy and very sweet. Flavor is burnt hops with a bitter aftertaste. Nice beer with a nice price.

Bottle at the Syracuse Holiday Brewfest Dec.04 2004. Yellowish brown with an offwhite head. Very hoppy aroma. Spiced malt andfloral hops in mouth. Rich bodied and interesting.

Deep burgundy color with a minimal head. Aroma is a mix of hops, fruit, and subtle spiciness. The flavor is malty with a touch of hops to finish. A bit of spice which is dominated by the malt and hops. Something else is needed here, a little more body would help. Drinkable, but not the best winter seasonal I've had.
