Winterhook is Redhook’s legendary winter ale, brewed annually since 1984. Crafted with an evolving mix of malts and hops, each yearly edition of Winterhook is one-of-a-kind. This year’s incarnation crafted by header brewer Nick Crandall is a Hoppy Dark Lager, combining the hops of a dank IPA, the malt of a brown ale, and yeast profile of a bock.

Very pretty deep red, small head, lots of carbonation bubbling up the sides. Strong in scent, cherryish... nice, but nothing overly great. Thick and malty. Slight coffee and chocolate hints... maybe some raisens in there too. Nice, but there's something that doesn't quite make me really like it. Well another seasonal tried- OK, but not the best I've had this winter.

2003 draft. Big dark red color with some bright oranges. Moderate sized copper colored head that leaves quickly. Clear. Aroma of light red/orange fruits, some mild hops and a good earthiness. I was very impressed with the flavor. Balanced, enjoyable. Lightl tart cherries and a good malt backbone with some spiciness to it. Very good to style. Faint bready and nutty flavors. No astringency. yum. Now if they could only fix their ESB.

Reminds me of an IPA instead of an English Strong. Poured clear red-brown, with a very thin light tan head. Surprisingly weak aroma, with a touch of citrus. Flavor was dominated by grapefruit and pine hops, with a touch of bready malts and hints of fruitiness. Very bitter finish. Rather thin-bodied. A play on SN Celebration Ale? In any case, what are American hops doing in an English Strong Ale?

Hearty this is not. This is a very weak english strong ale. The aroma has a faint roastiness, but not really anything else. The flavor is thin. all the roasty, malty and sweet flavors that should be present are there, but in such minute amounts that this tastes almost like they watered-down the beer. This is a beer to be avoided.

2002 bottle: I wasn't expecting too much from this one and I was not let down. It definitely needs to warm a little for any flavor to come through. Pours a dark amber color with minimal head and lace. Aroma is lightly matly and spicy. Flavor is slightly nutty with a little butterscotch or caramel but overall it is thin. Not as robust as I like my winter ales.

Deep red-amber with large beige head. Buttery spicy aroma (cinnamon? mint? spruce?). Smooth and malty with chocolate and caramel notes and a strong earthy finish. Lingering butterscotchiness. A little twangy in the finish as it warms. Fun to drink.

Golden-brown. Toasty, chocolatey, with a floral hoppiness. Body comes up quite empty, though. Toasty, woody notes but not much of that good stuff the aroma promised.
