Deep Mahogany in colour. Full bodied with a beautiful aroma of vanilla, hints of chocolate, toffee, and smoke on the nose. Flavour of dark fruits, toasted oak with cherry notes and a sweet malty finish. Drink this beer with caution or else prepare to be led seriously astray. Deceptively strong and smooth, this beer has subtle dark fruit notes with a little hint of chocolate & liquorice and with a generous hop character all of which has been enhanced by the 6 months ageing in Dingle Whiskey Bourbon casks.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Semi opaque dark brown beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Smooth palate, light and dry. Decent fine carbonation. Wasn’t expecting much CDA character in a 13.5% beer but I was wrong, Light dark malts, light piney hops. Inevitably spicy alcohol, brandyish. Dark fruits. Light finish Spicy linger. Big big CDA,

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Kenwell. Pours clear, amber-brown with a creamy beige head. The nose has creamy fruits, alcohol, bread, toffee, pine. Medium to big sweet flavor with some alcohol heat, rich ripe citrus, oily pine, faint toasted bread. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Hot and boozy to finish with toasted honey, bread, some orange, more oily pine. Pretty punchy but there’s some nice stuff here.

Bottle. Thanks to Kenny. It pours deep brown with a tiny beige head. The nose is roasty, pine needles, citrus, soap, treacle and candy. The taste is bitter-sweet, cocoa, caramel, toasty, caramel, soap, light alcoho and citrus. Hides abv well. Medium body and fine carbonation. Punchy, but drinkable.

Pours a beautifull deep black color, topped with average tan colored head. The aroma is malty with some chocolate and quite strong whisky aroma. The taste is initially on the sweet side, with some caramel, but soon the extra strong alcohol kicks in. Some bitterness, but lots of whiskey. Very strong with lots of alcohol. Still drinkable.

Bottle from Drinkstore, Dublin [130514]
Pitch black, big light tan head that dissipates, some lacing
Aroma of dark malts, quite deep malts, slight whisky notes, some alcohol, touch of chocolate, touch of citrus
Taste of sweet dark malts, dark fruits, some fairly bitter hops, quite boozy but fine here, getting some soft floral notes, slight aniseed?, rich flavour, interesting
Palate - soft carb, rich body, rather sweet , smooth. Finish has lots of warming alcohol, sweet dark malt linger
Overall - Decent beer but not really a black IPA

Brown, not much head. Fruity and complex aroma. Cigar box, port and alcohol. Similar taste, balanced with bitterness. Average to lively palate add to drinkability. Heavy drinking.

Rerate, 330 ml bottle with tear-off cap, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Mahogany colour, large off-white head. Lovely malty aroma and flavour, with notes of fortified wine and Irish whiskey. Very good beer. Original rating: Shared bottle at local tasting. Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head, some lacing. Pleasant aroma of fortified wine, mild roasty notes and hops. The same elements in the flavour, warming mouthfeel. A beer I would buy again.

To sample on your own or in the best of companies.

Bottle. Shiny brownish black with a minimal head. Aroma is ruby cask fruit. Flavor is dominated by warm dark fruity alcohol, no real hint of hops, roast malt on a dry fruit finish.

This isn’t a black IPA, I rated as such, but if rated as a barleywine, which I believe is a closer fit, than it would be rated higher. Translucent brown, almost no head, reflective of the abv. Nose is ethanol, caramel, resin hops, taste is of a hoppy barleywine, not sure if the barrel aging adds to or distracts from the complexity. No roasted coffee, dark chocolate, or other typical black ipa distinctions.
