A collaboration between Surly and the traveling Danish brewer Mikkel Bjergsø, this beer takes the concept of an IPA, blends in a variety of new German aroma hop varietals, and ferments them with Brettanomyces, rather than a traditional English ale strain. Light-bodied and dry, the combination of Brett and hop varieties offers complex earthy notes with tropical and candied fruit aromas, while the Honey Malt provides an intense malt sweetness.

(Bottle) Amber colour with big, frothy, off-white head. Fruity, spicy nose with notes of apricots, orange candy, caramel, barnyard, brett and flowers. Fruity, hoppy, spicy taste with apricots, orange peel, caramel, bretty yeast, stable, flowers and a generous citric citterness in the finish. Medium body, dry. Tasty and interesting, with a generous hop profile and a rich brett character, all in good balance. Very nice.

Bottle 75 cl. Pours a hazy deep golden with a lacing, white head. Gushed when opened. Masive Brett aroma - no massive. The heavy, leathery, sweaty kind. Body is initially sweet, a little flat and then totally dominated by the massive, mouthdrying and almost astringent Brett. Some late bitterness, but if there was ever any aroma hop character, it's all totally gone to the Brett. 141118

Bottle, 75cl. It’s a clear, golden colored beer with a dense, finger-thick diminishing white head leaving curtains. Brett-ish, funky aroma. Barnyard, leather, lemon and some peppery notes. Not much malts. Some caramel in the flavor, but it’s mostly on the hoppy, funky side. Lemon notes, orange zest, pine cone hints, leather and barnyard. It’s sort of full-bodied, yet it feels light, it has a pleasant carbonation and some alcohol warmth. Lasting finish. I’d prefer more IPA in this one, but the brett impact is lovely. Would’ve been nice to have tasted it fresher. 161209

75 cl bottle @ Leppävaara. BBE 04.01.2017
Aroma is fruity with bretta tones. Very foamy palate. Flavour has grapefruit, bretta tones, earthy notes and some fruits. Very foamy palate. I am not usually a friend of these bretta beers but this one is not that bad.

750ml bottle. BBE 17/01/04. Pours dark orange with a massive foamy head. Aroma of grassy hops, funky bretta notes, citrus, fruits and orange peel. Taste is sweetish, funky and fruity with some grass, bretta, citrus and orange peel. Finish is tartish, ripe fruity and funky with some bretta and citrusy notes. Okay, quite funky bretta IPA.
