March 2015. A dark ale with a rich roasted malt flavour. The chocolate characteristic comes from the Phoenix hops which also contribute notes of molasses and spice. To up the pirate credentials and to give the beer a smooth velvety mouthfeel we’re also adding Caribbean demerara sugar direct to the copper.

Cask at the 3 Horseshoes near Marlow. Brown with a thin beige head and a rather prickly fizz. Chocolate dominates with some pleasant roasty malt. Maybe a little thin, but that actually makes it oddly refreshing for a dark beer. Not bad, actually. Personally I’d probably class this as somewhere between a mild and a porter rather than as a bitter.

Sampled at the brewery. An attractive reddish copper colour with a ring of cream head; malty aroma; smooth with an earthy malt taste and a hint of chocolate; then a very dry finish. A pleasant change from the usual golden style of Rebellion’s monthly range.
