Cask at the Craven Arms, post Cotts Convention, 24/01/15. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is charr, roast malt, liquorice, dark malt, light smoke. Taste comprises light choclate, spice, dark malt, toffee, subtle smoke, light band aid, dark fruit rinds. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent smoked affair, well balanced, rauch doesn’t go mad.

Cask at Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Just about black. Fairly thick, bubbly tan head. Chocolate. Caramel. Light, savoury smoke. Taste is dry, with a light, roast bitterness. Palate is surprising airy. Finish is long, roast bitter. Quite light on the smoke. Very decent.

Cask half-pint at the 2014 Lincoln Beer Festival. Poured a good dark colour with a beige head that stayed. Smoky malts rule the brew in all aspects, deep routed earthiness ooze out of the beer which is neither sweet or dry, but just right. Impressed. I don’t usually go for ’smoked’ beers but this was fine and I’m pleased I tried it.
