To celebrate our 100th batch of beer, we departed from our traditional brewing methods and simply filled our mash tun with a much grain as it would hold. The result was this: a rich and roasty stout with layers of dark chocoalte and a think creamy head, in that same playful spirit, we continue to brew our batch 100 today.

Decent sample at The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County during a Beer and Indian Food tasting on 14th July 2014. Looked good and was. Black body with beige topping. Roasted, toasted malts rule the brew: Coffee and dark chocolate notes in both the aromas and taste. A delight to drink, sniff and look at. There is a mild earthiness to the flavour which prevents the brew becoming too sweet or one dimensional. A very pleasant easy drinking Stout with enough going on to keep any beer geek happy.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a slight dark tan head. Aroma is very malty with chocolate and maybe coffee. Med body. Flavor is treacle/toffee, smooth dark malt, coffee. Not getting chocolate, but the dark malt flavors are strong enough to hide a little. Might be a touch of anise. Finishes dryer than expected, but malt is still pretty dominant. This may be as good as stout gets without introducing barrels and/or brett.

On tap at the tasting room. Pours with a very near black body with a large tan head that lasts. Aromas are toasty, roasty, bready, floral, chocolate. Pretty hoppy, lightly spicy and earthy. Flavors are rich yet very bitter. Dark fruits, dark chocolate (bakers dark chocolate), currants, roast, medium hop character. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry, lasting bitterness, a touch warming.
