Yea, so this is your textbook west coast American strong (not that there is anything wrong with that) - heavy malt nose of raisin, cherry, dark bread, with the undercurrent of strong American hoppiness - taste is similar - some dark bread and mild dark fruit, but mostly resinous, citric, and slightly garlicky hops - for what it is, it’s alright.

Bottle from The Drinkery, Londonderry, NH. Aroma is bready malts with some yeasty dough. Appearance is cloudy dark reddish brown (like an apple cider with a lot of sediment) with virtually no head, no sparkle, minimal lacing. Taste is mild sweet early to middle with late mild bitter that lasts into the finish. Palate is medium bodied with fairly thick texture, carbonation to support the body but is not noteworthy. Overall, a very solid beer whose reputation exceeds it.

Bottle at Komachi. Nose is cherry, grapefruit, caramel, earth rye bread. Pretty, glowing red, clear, deep. Fine head. Strong alcohol, caramel, earth, a bit roasty. Somewhat gummy. Big chewy body. Nice peppery, prickly finish. Boring and not as good as the old one, and too strong.
