For a special release we aged our classic English-style Aipa in red wine barrels where it developed a complex flavour profile and aroma. A bit malt body and delicate red wine aroma add balance to the hop and tannic bitterness from the oak.

On tap at Spinnakers, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out butterscotch—not diacetyl—with caramel corn, subdued vinous notes and even more subdued English hops. Flavour reveals this to be more of the beer it's advertised as; there's lots of English hops, some resins, red wine tannins, and oak. It's always a strange decision to barrel age an IPA, but I'd say this one works — nice subdued English hops give way to the malt and red wine profile. Surprisingly good.
