A traditional Stout; the English Phoenix and Goldings hops provide a smooth bitterness as well as subtle hints of treacle in the aroma.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a very dark reddish drown with a small foamy cream head and good lacing. Roasted malts and dark fruits are the mainstays of a decent aroma. Plenty of activity in the mouth too. The texture is sweet and creamy with a slight smoky edge to it. Flavours of autumn cruits and chocolate with some hints of salt, and spices emerging later on. Finish is slightly dry and fruity. This is an excellent dry stout with plenty of character.

On cask at the Stockbridge Tap. Appearance - close to opaque black but with some red chinks. . Nose - chocolate and toffee with a nuttiness too. Taste - all of the nose redelivered on the taste. There’s a creamy backdrop too. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long elegant finish. Overall - a lovely stout. Not sure it’s dry though.

Cask at GBBF ’14, day 5, 16/08/14. Black with a good sized light tan covering that retains well. Nose is light roast, on the thin side, papery, faint cocoa powder. Taste comprises dark fruit notes, liqourice, light chocolate, brown bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, roasted notes in the close. Pretty average fayre, looked and felt good but lacked at the business end.
