We tried something new with this batch - we used a technique called "reiterated mashing", which involves mashing in with half of the grain, then collecting that wort, and using it to mash in the second half of the grain. The result is highly improved extraction of all the sweet sugars, fermentable or not, from the grain, which is usually quite hard to achieve with such a big beer.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark brown colour. Aroma of bread, caramel, mild spice. Full bodied, moderately sweet, it sits well somewhere between European impies and North American pastry stouts; dark sugars, caramel, touch of spice, breadcrust, rye.
Very good.

16oz @ Alex's. Appearance: dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: moderately sweet, some roasted malts and dark fruits, a bit of chocolate. Taste: along the same lines, pretty good body, a bit dry in the finish, dark chocolate. Overall: good one.

473mL can, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dry cocoa nibs and dry medium roast. Flavour brings out cocoa nibs, earthy roasted malt, and a touch of vanilla. Surprisingly tasty. Not the most intense or full-bodied but clean and tasty.
