The Lost Abbey Ultimate Box Set has been the most ambitious beer project I have ever worked on.
A series of small batch beers released once a month before being collectively offered at the end of the year has never been attempted as far as we can tell. So that alone makes this a pretty impressive feat. But for me, the coolest part of this Ultimate Box Set Release has been working with our artist, a professional designer and photographer to push the limits of beer-based design.
And while we have created an amazing finished piece, none of this would have been possible were it not for the beer. So please take our not so subtle hint (a bonus track beer inspired by The Police and their “Message in a Bottle”) as a reminder that sometimes beer can be a vehicle for expression but only if there’s a genuine message to be found in that liquid. And given that you are holding an Ultimate Box Set bottle, we’re pretty sure you agree.

375mL bottle, pours a deep dark amber, no head. Nose is all oxidation, balsamic, and acidic acid. Flavour is mega-oxidized, with lots of cardboard, acetic acid, and balsamic. Oxidized as fuck. Nasty.

Bottle bought through Drikkeriget. Pours hazy brownish golden with a small offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and fruity with caramel, sweet bread, toffee, vanilla fudge, sweet cherries, moist wood, grapes and cognac alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty, fruity and boozy. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny astringent, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, cherries, grapes and cognac alcohol. Hot still but also quite delicious. Love the malt fruit combo. --- Beer merged from original tick of Track #13: Message in a Bottle on 15 Oct 2016 at 23:39 - Score: 7. Bottle shared by Adam, thanks! Pours a cloudy deep Amber with a tan head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has a combination of earthy grain and toffee with a bit of caramel supporting. Flavor has lots of toffee and bread with bourbon and sweet grains supporting.

Botte. It’s a clear one, dark amber to light brown in color and almost flat. It’s deliciously smelling, with caramel malts, roasted notes, dried fruits and caramel, alcohol and a touch of canned peaches. Some piney, resiny notes too. It’s full-bodied, warming and semi-sweet on the palate. Caramel, dried fruits and some roasted malts in the flavor. Peach hints and resiny, piney hoppy bitterness too. Lasting finish. Perhaps a bit too warming this one, but I like it a lot. It’s sweet, but far from sticky. Nice indeed. 141220
