Bottle shared at the chriso pre-Christmas tasting 2014 - London. Pours clear amber with a bubbly off-white head. The nose has grainy toast, leaves, leathery fruits, bread and hints of toffee. Big sweet flavor, pretty boozy, with earthy and leafy bitterness. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation. Hot finish with grainy bread, brown sugar, semi-dark fruits, crunchy leaves. So so. Pretty hefty.

Bottle picked up at ’Jacks’ Westholme Store, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon, consumed at cottage in Faraway, Devon, Friday 21st November 2014. I guess that this is the barley wine cousin of the Vitesse Noir. It is also too sweet and a little too boozy. Thick in mouth, a bit muddy looking, actually not really my thing. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Nose is toffee, strong vinous, sherry note, slight. Taste is malty, sticky, strong wood, nut, alcohol is over present, emerging light chocolate as it warms, raisins and dark fruits battle behind the pepper from the alcohol. finish lasts and is woody, and ultimately too peppery. It’s an uneven barley wine, that never incorporates it’s high alcohol adequately drowning the subtitles that lurk

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours dark brown with a small creamy head. Big fruity nose, toffee and spice. Taste has a raw boozy note that might need a bit of time to mellow, but more big fruit and toffee. Nice.

Tap at Sheffield Tap. Clear, darkest red. Off white, thin, tight, lasting head. A very handsome beer. Dried vinous fruits, dark sugar, cough syrup (but not in a bad way!). Taste is sweet initially, then red grape, tangy dry. Loads of chew. Alcohol warmth. Sticky goodness. This isn’t beer... It’s a remedy.

Cask at The White Horse Old Ale fest 2013, Parsons Green ,London. A dark brown/ruby coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Malty, caramel, dark fruit aroma. Tastes malty, caramel, dark fruit, spice, port like. Quite drinkable despite the strength.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 24 Nov 2013) Dark reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel and vinous hints of alcohol. Malty, fruity, vinous taste with dark fruit, red wine (or even port wine), glögg (Swedish version of mulled wine, but sweeter and spicier), raisins, dried fruit and a certain spicy bitterness in a finish with a fiery alcohol glow. Full body, fairly sweet. Chewy and rounded mouthfeel. Quite fiery and possibly not perfectly balanced, but very tasty and quite drinkable for its strength. Nice one.
