Another epic blend of beers not widely seen out side our tasting bar. The base for Track #4 starts off as two freshly emptied barrels which were to be part of our Veritas 009 blend. To these barrels we have married two French Oak red wine barrels that have been harboring Hot Rocks Lager for nearly two years. The base beer sports a deep black color with crimson highlights. Flavors of leather, tobacco and a wine like jammy quality were developed as the base beer.
The addition of Hot Rocks Lager aged in Wine barrels brings a strain of Brettanomyces not normally found in our beers (wine strain we found in the barrels as we did not inoculate them here at the brewery). As is our hope for all these blends, the sum of all the parts has yielded great results. Perhaps one of the more subtle yet harmonious blends to date for our brewers, this one promises to deliver another great Lost Abbey experience.

Bottle courtesy of GT2, thanks! Clear dark maroon color, almost flat. Aroma of subtle slightly sour coffee. Taste is dark fruit and roast. Not bad.

Bottle pours with a mahogany body that supports a thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up prunes and apples and a bit of spicy oak and then bourbon booze at the end of the draw. The taste is pretty bourbon-y and spicy oak with a modest note of molasses covered red apple wedges. Overall a bit boozy.

Track tasting. Opened with a little pop, poured a cola color with not much of a head here. Aroma is over-ripe fruits, touch of banana. Flavor is... unfortunate. Its not bad, but its not as good as it could have been. Bummer.

Bottle at Lost Abbey. Pours with a near black hue with a small tan head that lasts as a ring. Aromas are of bourbon, black currant, brown sugar, vanillin, barrel, tongue depressors, alcohol, vinous, red wine, light brett. Tons of wood. Smells like there is a lot of Veritas 009 in this beer (if my memory of 009 is still sharp). Flavors are vinous, bourbon, mildly sour, saw dust, cola, whiskey, brown sugar, medium to medium high tannic bitterness, plums, dates, red wine and mild melanoidins. Black cherry, pepper, dried currants, dried cherries, craisins, tobacco, damp/earthy leaves as it warms. Mild phenols, stronger horsey and barnyard notes along with bourbon as it warms. Persimmons and Christmas cake. Complex and layered to say the least. Fuller bodied, warming with medium carbonation.
