This malty lager is our most award-winning beer: it took gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival from 2006 to 2010. Cutlass Amber has a toasted, biscuity character. The slight sweetness comes from Crystal malt. Vienna malt contributes a remarkable smoothness and Munich malt gives an amber color and delicate aroma. Tettnang hops infuse the beer with a slight earthiness. Formerly named Heavy Seas Märzen, Cutlass Amber is our second best-selling beer. In 2012, Cutlass Amber won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Vienna Lager category.

As stated in earlier reviews, this bottle does not say ’Balto’ on it. A little off on the olfactory when popped. Color is toward brown yellow clearness. Fairly smooth flavor which has some hay in there. Short interesting near bitterness. Weird sweetness in its own way. Clean palate, finish is lager acceptable.

Bottle. Labeled as simply Clipper City MärzHon... (no Balto) but I couldnt find any more information on it so I’m posting here. Pour is a amber and the head has died to almost nothing while I tried tofigure out whether there was a difference between the two labels. Aromas are sweet bread dough, honey and a touch of pepper or clove spiciness. Flavor is kind of thin but the peppery edge is fairly pronounced up front, transitioning to sweet and doughy malts. This is fairly decent as a thin and refreshing Märzen.

The body on this Oktoberfest was too thin to propel it beyond just average amid all the dozens of Oktoberfest/Marzens on the market. Clear amber/golden pour with a short beige head. Strong nose of malty sweetness, particularly toffee and caramel and some fruitiness. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. Moderate carbonation. Thin body and watery texture. Finish lingers with a sweetness.

[Bottled] Deep golden, buttery aroma. Sweet and caramelly with clean, hard mouthfeel. Dominated by crystal malt in sort of a pastisch of the style. There are some nice flavours, but a Märzen needs to be softer to be enjoyable.

Given as a free gift/sample to be consumed out of my favorite tulip glass. Pours pretty amber/peach with not much of a head... but that color is absolutely gorgeous. Smells of a hoppy amber lager with some sweetness buried deep inside. Taste... mmm, this is nice and smooth. A bit of a coppery flavor without being entirely metallic, with the main flavor being sweet (yet light) maltiness, followed by a slightly tangy hoppiness. Where the Marzen is not my favorite style of beer by any means, it’s certainly drinkable... especially this one, which is crisp and quite refreshing. Has a very nice finish, reminding me (although only slightly) of one of my favorites: Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold. You could do a LOT worse in the style... this one is worth checking out.
