This malty lager is our most award-winning beer: it took gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival from 2006 to 2010. Cutlass Amber has a toasted, biscuity character. The slight sweetness comes from Crystal malt. Vienna malt contributes a remarkable smoothness and Munich malt gives an amber color and delicate aroma. Tettnang hops infuse the beer with a slight earthiness. Formerly named Heavy Seas Märzen, Cutlass Amber is our second best-selling beer. In 2012, Cutlass Amber won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Vienna Lager category.

Bottle. Not too bad, but frankly nothing special. Malt flavor, with some hops. Sweet flavor, with a small kick of honey.

Harris Teeter, DC sixer ($9): Pours an orange color with minimal head action. Aroma of sugar, caramel, and malts. Taste is slightly bitter, but as you keep drinking it the sweetness it really what is most pronounced. Good mouth feel and easily chuggable, but by no means one of the best marzens I’ve had; better ones exist on both sides of the pond.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of my baby bro, Jetson. Clear, burnt orange appearance with a fluffy, off-white head. A nice caramel, slightly nutty malty aroma with a touch of dark fruitiness. Sweet caramel malty, nutty, earthy hoppy flavor with a sweet finish. Ok.
