I went into Milly’s today on a whim and was surprised to find this beer on tap, yes please. Pours a jet black color with a creamy beige head that displays moderate retention and lace. Smells heavy on the burnt caramel, anise, brown sugar and light roasted coffee and earthy hops. Frankly this wasn’t what I was expecting as I set the glass under my nostrils. Taste is bitter astringent coffee and roasted grains, hints of anise and molasses, burnt caramel, and a moderate earthy hop bite. Medium body, thick sweet burnt sugary mouthfeel, light to medium level of carbonation. Wow this one is a mess. It smells like a Foreign extra stout with too much dark caramel malt. Missing is any chocolate or dark fruit flavor, creamy mouthfeel, etc. I did not enjoy this one very much. Maybe I can try it in a couple of months after it has had time to settle down, but as is this is a pass.
