Scotsman Alexander Findlay is known as the father of American golf. During the late 1800s, he designed and built golf courses all along Florida’s east coast at the behest of railroad baron, Henry Flagler. In so doing, he had to combine elements of the rugged, wind swept hillside courses of his homeland with the lush tropical paradise he found in South Florida.

In the same way, Tequesta Brewing Company has taken the best qualities of a Wee Heavy Scotch Ale and married it with tropical citrus flavors of American hops to create Hopscotch Ale. The first sip of this mahogany colored, oak aged, full bodied beer takes you to old Scotland with malty, toasty, roasty flavors balanced with caramel sweetness and a hint of smoke from the peated malt. The citrus flavors and aromas of Amarillo and Citra hops brings you back to our sandy shores. One taste of Hopscotch Ale will definitely make you want to kick up your heels.

Received in trade from MeadMe, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish off white head that dissipates quickly. Oddly hoppy earthy and citrusy aroma for a scotch ale. Dark sugars and fruits round out the aroma quite nicely. The flavor is sweet up front with dark sugars and a hint of oaken bourbon and an onslaught of vanilla. Light fruity tartness as well as a touch of butterscotch round out the flavor. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. This one is quite unique, it reminds me of something I’d be handed to try at a homebrew club meeting. Not horrible, but not something I would want again.

From the April 2013 3R6P beer tasting. +++ Sampled from a growler this beer poured a dark brown color with a medium sized foamy beige head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was strong floral hops - gritty and leafy. The flavor was dryish caramel, nut, gritty floral hops and a touch of chalk. Medium length dryish nut and floral hop finish. Medium body. Ok.
