Black Roses is an experimental imperial stout from our brewpub, brewed with rose water and dates, then conditioned on toasted almonds and pistachios. A strange but harmonious melange that balances both delicate and bold flavours.

(500ml bottle from Hafis c/o my better half) Pours black with a reddish-brown head that fades without lace. Aroma is very unique in character, dates, pistachio, fresh perfumed flowers, Persian spice blend, dark caramel, chocolate, touches of almond paste. Flavour is drier than the nose suggests, more dominated by the nut additions. Milk chocolate, pisatchio ice cream, flowers, soft date/dried fig sweetness, sort of dry powdery roast meets almond character. Finish is cacao, nuts, florals, soft spices, bone dry with a bit of booze heat and more touches of dusty light roast. Mouthfeel's a little light for style, feels very attenuated overall, carbonation is quite light with a little prickle. Definitely creative adjunct-wise, especially on the nose. While I'm glad it wasn't a sugar bomb, I'd like a little more sweetness and body to move away from alcohol and elevate the dates.
