Checkers & Chess was one of our favorite hoppy releases last year, and when we secured a grip of profoundly expressive 2023 Freestyle NZ Cascade a few months ago, this 6.8% Southern Hemisphere IPA was swiftly added back to our brew schedule.

As usual, pilsen performs the role of base malt… just before oat malt, flaked wheat, and flaked rye steal the scene with their soft silkiness. Secret Citra, ever the unsung hero, dominates the whirlpool. Then, for the grand finale, NZ Cascade goes toe to toe with Galaxy in the dry-hop. An even 50-50 split. Has that big tropical Australian bully finally met its match? Are you having fun?

Explosions of guava. Citrus. Lychee. Peach. Passion fruit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Pint can, WW. Murky pale gold with a soft white head. Pineapple, orange peel, pine, lemon nose. Flavor is lemon and grapefruit peel, pine.

Pint pour. Poured a hazy golden yellow color with a small off-white head. Aroma was light citrus, floral notes, light pine. Lemon notes, some sharp pine resin character there. Light tropical citrus. Decent.

Ocelot in top form like hunting capybaras. Super piny with some mango and tangerine. Hazy orange pour with ok head. Astringent finish. Very astringent. Tap at Rustico.

4 oz pour on draft at Ocelot. Hazy golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of citrus, floral notes, light pine, lemon peel. Tastes of floral notes, citrus, big pine, tropical fruit, lemon peel. Medium body with a dry finish. Nice.
