Chicory is fast becoming one of our favorite spices. It lends this brown ale a woody spice like cinnamon and black pepper as well as a brown sugar and molasses sweetness. Those flavors and aromas, along with the chocolate, coffee and toasty malts make this a malt lover’s dream.

The beer is dark brown with a creamy, voluminous head of light brown foam. Some lacing. The aroma is big on chocolate with the roasty, nutty flavor of chicory root. Medium roast and acidity. Some licorice and coffee. Brown sugar and caramel maltiness. Taste starts sweet with cocoa and licorice. Firm roastiness with a woody flavor to it. A lot more coffee. The chicory is fairly strong. Lingering aftertaste full of the spice. More caramel in the taste. Rich and packs a lot of flavor for a 5% abv beer. The finish has medium bitterness, perhaps a bit much. Mouthfeel is smooth and fairly creamy. It’s a nicely made beer. I’m not sure if I like so much chicory, but I’m also getting through the glass pretty quickly. Fun change of pace from Cellarmaker.
