Dark Honey Ale

Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

Hops: Strisselspalt, Nothern Brewer, Hallertau Hersbrucker
Malts: Pils, Dark Munich, Wheat Mal, Chocolate Malt, Flaked Oats
Secret Ingredients: Honey and Molasses

Bottle from Best Damn Beer Shop. Pours very dark and ruddy. Very slight head. Aroma suggests treacle with a hint of what might be honey. Med + body. Flavor is dark malt with a treacle note. However, it is quite dry and just mildly bitter. Might have a touch of chocolate in the finisher.

Location: 12 oz bottle from State Line, 2/21/15

Aroma: The aroma is somewhat sweet, some smokey notes, nuts, caramel, molasses, and chocolate
Appearance: It pours a clear brown color with a light red hue, a tan head, and light, spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is light-medium sweet, same components as the nose, earthy, slightly bitter finish
Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, with an average carbonation, and a fairly short duration
Overall Impression: Thought this was a decent beer overall, but it just felt a little too lacking to get a higher score from me than this. It's a solid beer, but it isn't quite up to the level of the other Off Color beers I've rated.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toast, dark bread, honey, molasses, chocolate, light nuttiness, pear, apple, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, dark bread, honey, molasses, chocolate, light nuttiness, pear, apple, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, dark bread, honey, molasses, chocolate, light nuttiness, pear, apple, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice altbier style. All around good robustness, balance, and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Rating from March 2014....Amber on the pour with a skimming of a tan head....honey honey honey!....oh dear that smells sweet.....the palate is a burst of malt mixed with honey and tainted with molasses(faint) at first .....really tasty--a linger of honey on the finish, which is very clean--not a heavy beer for the amount of scent and taste....a little caramel and a sour fruit (faint) finish
