Dark Honey Ale

Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

Hops: Strisselspalt, Nothern Brewer, Hallertau Hersbrucker
Malts: Pils, Dark Munich, Wheat Mal, Chocolate Malt, Flaked Oats
Secret Ingredients: Honey and Molasses

Draught @ CBC’14
Aroma is rather malty and somewhat woody with berries and hints of smoke. Feels very German. Flavour is somewhat smoky with wood and malty tones. Also some bun dough. Feels a bit like grΓ€tzer.

Tap @CBC2014
Dark brown color, small steady beige head. Chocolate, cocoa, caramel, maltyness in the nose. Light to medium-bodied. Caramel, chocolate/cocoa flavors, low bitterness. Nothing wrong with this, like strong Vienna. Suprisingly honey is not much present except with sweetness.

4 ounce draft at ChurchKey poured into a tasting snifter. Pours dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, sweet malt, slight nutty notes, toast. Tasting notes of caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, biscuit. Medium body with a dry finish. Syrupy oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Very nice.

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Tan head with excellent retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Honey, molasses and cocoa aromas. Dry and thin with sweet honey upfront turning to molasses before the abrupt cocoa finish.

A reddish copper ale with a thick frothy nitro mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with grassy notes, dark fruits, OK. In mouth, a light watery sweet fruity malt with light caramel and chalky character, honey, OK.

Bottle offered @ gmellison. Got this bad boy in a trades with Adam. Thanks! Clear orangish brown appearance with a thin khaki head. Fair amount of roast and caramel notes in the nose. A bit of dust and burnt sugar / molasses as well. Woody, nutty, herbal flavor. Low sweetness, surprisingly. Slight chocolate and roast in the flavor as well. Kind of strange and not my cup of tea but not horrible.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home prior to heading up north to play a show. Appearance is a nice pitch black with a thin white rim. Aroma of oats and honey, little bit of chocolate malt, slight bit of molasses, has a nice tea like aroma. Taste is great, nicely balanced between chocolate malt and honey with a faint touch of molasses. Very enjoyable ale for a Saturday afternoon.
