Originating in Einbeck, Germany, the Bavarian pronunciation of the now world famous town is ’billy goat’! Maltier, stronger and darker than you dare! Think Bavaria, clinking steins and merriment as the perfect accompaniment to this homage to Dopplebock!

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. The goat on the label scared my wife, which is neither here nor there but should be noted. Mid brown. Crystal malt, candied orange and brown sugar on the nose. Sweet, heavy malt taste. Sour/sweet most of the way down except for a reasonable bitterness on the finish. A good beer from the ever-dependable Bateman’s. However, as this beer won the 2013 Sainsbury’s Beer Hunt, perhaps I was expecting something more complex.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Medium brown in colour with a decent, off-white head. Sweet, berry fruits and brown sugar, with some house yeast and warming finish. Good.

Brown 500ml bottle: BBD 31 Oct 14, poured into a Batemans badged UK pint sleeve @ home on 22 Oct 13. Rich mahogany body with a good off-white to beige head that lasted. Sweet malt molasses in both the nose and mouth: an English twist to a German Double Bock style flavour. I really took to this, but I like sweet malty beers and my favourite style is ’Doppelbock’ so this was right up my street. Too sweet for many maybe, but it’s toffee apple and caramel notes touched my taste buds nicely.

500ml bottle from Sainsbreeze. Pours mahogany brown. Cereal malts, medium sweet, raisins, vague toffee but fairly light on taste. Ok but a bit underwhelming.

Bottle from Sainsburgers. All a bit nondescript really. Lots of brown sugar sweetness. Bit sticky. Not for me.

Nose: Light leather, toffee, nut. Taste is malt, caramel, slight toffee. Finish is sweet and short. Very cloying mouthfeel. Weak flavours and sticky sugar finish made this below average.

Dark, ruby beer with an off-white head. Strong mix of malt, hop and fruit in the aroma. The sweetness comes through a bit more strongly in the flavour, not so much as to be over-powering, just as a nice complement to the hop and malt. Lacks a distinctive enough finish to be anything like a favourite of mine but it’s rather nice.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Murrayfield [011013]
Caramel brown, off white head, clear
Aroma - Caramel malts, soft roast, slight minerals, raisins, bit flinty
Taste of fruity caramel malts, malty beer, sweet caramel, soft toffee, slight minerals, getting some yeast, soft English twig hop
Palate - Soft carb. medium bosy, smooth. Finish - smooth, fairly sweet fruity raisiny malts
Overall - I’m always not that found of that mineraly yeast taste, but some nice fruity malts in here. One of Bateman’s better beers.

500ml bottle at home. Pours clear reddish brown, no head. Flat, actually. Aromas are toffee, caramel, herby hops. More of the sweetness on the taste. I can see why this is in English Strong and not Doppelbock! Watery, with a separation between the alcohol and the other sweet malts flavours. Astringent finish.
