This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Huge in body with strong flavors of espresso, chocolate and molasses, this unique iteration of Zhukov’s adds roasted hazelnuts and vanilla to impart even more complexity and depth of flavor to this massive, jet-black stout. In the immortal words of Marshal Zhukov himself, “Есть вещи в России, которые не являются, как они кажутся.”

Bottle, 22oz. Shared by Meilby. A pitch black beer with a tan head. Rather oily, with some lacing left. Roasted malts, coffee, licorice notes, vanilla, nuts, caramel, booze and some dark rye bread. It’s full-bodied and sticky-sweet, warming, with a smooth carbonation. Roasted malts, coffee, some licorice and dark rye bread in the flavor, licorice notes and some alcohol. Lots of hoppy bitterness. Lasting roasted finish with vanilla, nuts and some licorice. Delicious. 170604

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of intense fake hazelnut and vanilla extract is not really that interesting. Taste is a mix of astringent bitter roasted malt with quite a bit of residual sugar notes with some hazelnut and vanilla extract which don’t really fit in the mix. Body is full with oily texture and good carbonation with some warming alcohol notes. Low-level of drinkability with too much astringency notes.

Bottle, shared at THT, Brouwerij Kwartje, May 2017. Pitch black color. Dark brown head. Just as you’d expect from CC. Aroma’s: tar, booze/alcohol, green apples. Retronasal it’s green apples, acetone, roast, just very faint hazelnut. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasty, light vanilla. Rather strong alcohol feel and full body. Quite disappointing, esp. the aroma.
