Madison River Brewing Company presents Salmon Fly Honey Rye. The malted barley used in this unique brew is complimented by the subtle spiciness of rye. Bittering and flavor hop additions help keep this brew extremely balanced. In addition, there is a mild sweetness that dulls any overwhelming rye or hop flavor derived from the pure local Montana honey. These ingredients blend together to create a lighter bodied drinking experience for all kinds of beer drinkers.

12 oz. bottle at the Sun Room Bar at the Lake Hotel in Yellowstone. Pours a light, hazy, brownish orange color, with a small, fizzy, tan head. The aroma is a touch of rye spice under a general character of clover honey. There are notes of lemon and berries, with some cloves. Honey sweetness, with very little bitterness, but a nice rye spice that gives in a nice kick. Medium body, smooth feel with a light bite in the finish. This is hardly the best rye beer I’ve had, and it is too sweet, but it works surprisingly well, in my opinion. Subtle, drinkable, and fun.

Pours a light amber from a bottle. Bit o’ honey aroma, slightly sweet flavor. Where’s the rye? Okay beer.

12 oz bottle. Aroma consists of honey, caramel malt bordering on cloying; vaguely vomity. Pours cloudy golden with a collapsing white head. Taste is mildly sweet with flavors of honey, light spicy rye. Reminds me of a flavored macro lager in its blandness. Not too impressed, but it’s drinkable. A side note here: I don’t think this is brewed with raspberries like it says in the description here. The bottle makes no mention of it, there’s no pink hue, no flavors of raspberry whatsoever. Maybe an earlier incarnation of this beer was brewed with raspberries?

Bottle from Bullwinkle’s Liquor in West Yellowstone, MT. Pours hazy gold with a slight white head. Aroma is a little honey and a little rye spice. Med body or nearly. Flavor matches aroma. Not getting much raspberry. But a little. Finishes fairly bitter. Flavor is not weak, but it’s kind of like it’s weak. Nothing really punching hard here. It needs a strong point, but hasn’t got one.

Bottle. An almost clear one, golden in color and with a small, off-white head. The aroma has some honey notes, it’s quite fruity and there’s also some dms going on. The flavor has pale malts in the back, it’s quite dry on the palate, with a pretty low level of carbonation. Some fruityness in the flavor, and a little bitterness towards the finish. Well, I’m not disappointed with this one, but it’s damn boring and uninteresting. 140118
