750ml bottle. Cloudy, dark brown colour with average, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Nuttily, dark malty aroma, hints of molasses, a touch of dark fruit. Taste is nuttily dark malty, hints of molasses. Rather simple and monotonous.

’Stoutish’ porter with molasses, vintage bottle still with the previous label, first beer from this Massachusetts brewery for me. Thick, creamy, regularly shaped, pale yellowish beige, lightly lacing mousse atop a very dark, burgundy-hued bronze, near to blackish but still largely translucent and hazy. Elegant and refined aroma of liquorice candy, soggy brown bread, dried cranberries and dito plums, pear syrup, dark berry jam, pistachio nuts, black olives, tea leaves, molasses, gravy, orange peel, dried porcini. Restrained, clean but adequate fruitiness in the onset, lots of raisin and candied fig flavors, sweetish with a brambleberry-like sourish undercurrent, very subtle black olive-like umami touch, bit leathery even in the end, with soft carbo and ’fluffy’, smooth and notably resinous mouthfeel. Caramelly, toffeeish malt middle, sweet with a toasted bitterish edge becoming more pronounced in the finish, meeting with a dash of peppery hop bitterness but remaining gentle and adding liquorice and molasses flavors in the tail, with drying, softly spicy and sweetish effect. Aromatic, elegant beer, which apparently ages graciously, motivating to find out more about this brewery. Much more a robust porter than anything stout-like, though.

Stable thick beige head over yellow-shot dark brown beer; some lace. Caramel, molasses, leafy, dark mlats and melanoidins. Smells rather sweetish. Dry, very leafy, bitterish flavour on sweeter malty underbuild.. Molasses seem to be fermented out almost completely. Roasted. Seems rather well bodied, certainly for its ABV; slick, dry. Some UK character indeed.

750 ml bottle into snifter, batch #016. Pours clear very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces t oa small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, molasses, toast, dark bread, pepper, light char/coffee, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, molasses, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, molasses, toast, dark bread, light char/coffee, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, raisin, plum, fig, date, molasses, toast, dark bread, pepper, light coffee/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, molasses, and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate bitter/roasted dryness after the finish as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice English/Belgian stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, molasses, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on. This has the balanced character of a dry stout and English porter as advertised; with some additional spicy Belgian yeast character. A unique and very enjoyable offering.
