That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Short Pump, VA. Pours a very dark brown color with a mediim sized frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of big chocolate notes, roasted malts, resin and herbal hop finish. The taste is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a resin hop finish. Medium bodied. Nice beer.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a deep brown head with a dark brown head. Piney, minty, chocolate, fairly roasty, a touch floral aroma. Burnt chocolate malty, a touch smoky, minty, sprucey flavor. Pretty nice brew. I got this in a mixer sixer but may need to pick up a six pack of it in the near future.

I typically have mixed feelings about Left Hand, but I have enjoyed all of the fade to black series, so I jumped on this when I saw it - pour is pretty darn black (some ruby around the edges) - frothy tan head that settles to a fairly thick lace - nose is semi-sweet and lightly bitter and charred malt character, quickly followed by an earthy, woody hop character - that aroma comes together pretty well - medium bodied - medium-soft carbonation - fairly creamy in the mouth - flavor is fairly sweet up front, much more so than the aroma suggests - some chocolate and roast leads in - hop flavors and bitterness follow close behind as the beer starts to dry out - hops are earthy, potent and fairly green - woody/pine - finish is dry, with peppery hops and a light dry, flinty/chalky note - a little sweet up front for me, but it manages to minimize the astrigency that so often plagues these kinds of beers - pretty good!
