That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz: Pours a black color with a creamy light brownish head. Aroma is citrus, roasted malt, a bit of pepper, and a hint of coffee. Taste is ever so slightly sweet. Some amount of bitterness. Nice roasted coffee. Nicely balanced malt and hoppy character, but I was not really impressed.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, 20130314) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, malts, Earl Grey tea and peach. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were hops, fruitiness, sweetness, roasted malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, sweet, bitter and mildly roasty. A good and different Black IPA.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours black with a thick dark brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces beautifully. Aroma has a combination of citrus and roasted malts with backing dark grains. Flavor starts with musty dark grains and roasted malts with a light pine note coming out in the finish.

12oz bottle pours nice and dark with a thin mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee, spicy black licorice that seems Mt. Hood hop like and then a faint resiny hoppiness. The taste is similar with dark roasted malts to rich deep dark roasted coffee and burnt malts blending with some tasty chocolate goodness. Toward the finish the black licorice like spicy hops and a dash of resiny hops takes this into the finish and after taste. This interpretation of the style leans firmly toward roastiness and I feel it comes across very well.

Bottle. Chocolate malt and piney hops aroma. Black with a large brown head. Sweet coffee/mocha malt , citrus peel, and earthy resinous piney hops flavor. Medium body, soft carbonation. I really like black IPAs, but this one is a bit unbalanced, and could stand to be a little more malt forward.

A dark brown ale with a thin creamy brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate with piney floral hops, butterscotch, nice. In mouth, a nice black IPA with chocolate malt grassy floral hops, nutty notes, decent. On tap at Barcode NJ, Dec. 31 2012.

Draft. Pours a dark black with minimal head. Aroma of roasty chocolate with some earthy pine and citrus. Taste is about the same. Light bitter. Not a bad beer really, but not super special. A little thin for my taste.

Bottle. Black body with a big, fizzy off-white head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malt, husky grain, grass, resin, burnt grain. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Slightly husky, a little too resinous, but not as harsh as other black IPAs I’ve had, likely due to the sweetness of this beer.
