This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Tap into frozen mug at Oasis..grrr. Big and rich, I would’ve guessed 8.5%, pretty nice for 10%. The rye is actually well incorporated, still pretty noticeable, adds some extra sweet, chewy, sugary gingerbread undertones..which almost have a buttery touch. Good, but not so exciting for Stone. Enjoyable enough, well crafted.

Hazy bronze and copper coloured body with a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of assertive hops, lemons, tea, light malt and quite a bit more hops - nice. Medium to Full-bodied; Assertive medicinal and pungent resinous flavour with alcohol, lemons, tea and a lot of pine noticeable. Aftertaste shows way more hops than malt with a very pungent alcohol bite and a lingering bitterness that doesn’t fare very well. Overall, a rather bitter and pungent beer that doesn’t vibe well and shows a bit too much bitterness and not enough malt - not a horrible beer, just one that goes on a bit strong and is in a large format bottle. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Woodbridge, Virginia on 25-August-2012 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 01-June-2013.

Bottle: Poured a slight hazy amber color ale with a large foamy head with great retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of citrus floral hoppy notes with some good notes of lemon. Taste is dominated by citrus and resinous hops notes with clear lemon notes without any tart flavours. Fruity notes from the Amarillo with light residual sugar form the malt backbone bring out a good balanced mix overall. Body was quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very good and one beer that Stone should keep producing as a regular instead on an Anniversary one.

Bottle: Pours a cloudy copper-orange color with a monster sand colored head. Nice lacing too. Nose is citrus and floral hops, caramel malt, and lemon. As is warms, the lemon scent really takes over, but it remains a sweet and inticing smell. The lemon takes center stage in the flavor profile, along with citrus and piney hops. The strong malt backbone is present, but subdued by the lemon. While I really enjoyed this, I’d imagine if you don’t care for lemon you may want to keep on walking. Thanks Jeremy for the hookup.

Bra bett i beskan såklart. Lite trött och en tvist som jag tycker var bra men inte riktigt mitt i prick.

I picked up this beer at ASAHIYA or CBB awhile ago. It poured a nice golden orange color with a light carbonation and a quickly dissipating head. The aroma is floral, citrus with a mild funk. The flavor is great, some lemon, spice and a bit of bitter puckering at the back of the mouth. They use 5 types of hops which make for a complex brew. It’s great! Nicely balanced with a malty sweet base. Possibly if I’d drunk it fresh the hops would have been strong to overpowering... at the moment it’s just right up my alley! I really like this IPA and it is a type I usually don’t enjoy this much...

Bottle at Asahiya. Pretty orange-amber, low head. Nice hop nise, citrus, menthol, pine, herbs. Big herbal, medicinal, menthol flavor. Nice rich malt. Too much of the verbena, probably, the minty menthol flavor is over the top. Very sweet too.
