This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a hazy orange with an off white head. Lemon verbena evident in the floral hop nose. Bold flavors of lemon and citrus. Nicely balanced. Not your average DIPA. Quite nice.

Bottle - Aroma is sweet, rich with lemon and tropical fruits, almost candy like. Clear orange with a light head. Lot’s of alcohol and a lemon dish soap, candy quality. Very rich on the palate. Smells great, but too much alcohol and lemon for my taste.

Bomber bought @ Systembolaget. Pours very hazy orangish golden with a frothy and creamy offwhite head that leaves lots of sticky trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, fruity and hoppy with biscuits, oily citrus zest, grapefruit juice, oily pine, marmalade, alcohol, lime leaves, lemon balm, resinous wood, crackers and dried apricots. Taste is sweet and bitter with biscuits, crackers, oily freshly grated citrus zest and peal, bitter oranges, grapefruit juice, lime leaves, lemon grass, oily pine, resinous wood, cedar wood, bread, dried apricots and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, oily bitter, very tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with crackers, oily pine, bergamot, bitter oranges, grapefruit rinds, lemon grass, resinous wood, bread and hints of alcohol.

Bottle. Almost clear copper/deep amber liquid with medium off - white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, biscuit, lemon peel, grass, toffee and grapefruit. Maybe a bit too malty for my taste. Taste is light sweet and medium to high bitter with notes of lemons, citrus, lemon peel and toffee. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a light alcohol burn. Quite allright. A bit astringent.

On tap at Tap East. Clear amber colour thin white head. Big resiny hop aroma. Big hoppy toffee flavour. Lots of grapefruit. Lots of everyrthing with that american empty malt flavour in the middle. Yes lits of hops. Bit of heat on end. Good elements like the grapefruit and it getting me drunk but not quite all together.
