This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bottle. Orange colour with a large off-white head. Aroma of pine, malt. Flavour is hoppy, zest, bitter.

Bottle. Golden/light copper body. Frothy, off-white head, mostly lasting. Aroma of toasted and raw grain, lemon, alcohol. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, soft carbonation. Hot alcohol and a flavor that reminded me of lemon Pledge was off-putting, at least at first. That dialed down, giving way to a lingering bitterness, pepper and lemon peel. Not much in the way of the malts.

@Bent River-on tap-lt tan head with trailing lace-gold. A-sweet citrus/tropical. T-sweet resin/citrus/tropical/peach hops with some bite, 2nd lt/med malt. Somewhat thick mouthfeel that finishes dry.

A golden IPA with a thick creamy light mocha head. In aroma, a sweet caramel fudge with light herbs and resinous hops. In mouth, dark caramel, roasted malt with loads of malt, alcohol and grassy resinous hops, lemon rind, oily mouthfeel. On tap at Belmont, Portland, Oct. 6 2012.

Beautiful amber color, medium sized creamy head. Wonderful aroma, fresh resiny hops, some lemon. Lean mouthfeel, very good toffee flavor with huge lemony and resiny hops, light bergamot too, a feeling of Earl Grey. Extreme bitterness, pleasure.

Bottle at the Sour and Saison Tasting, London. Pours clear, dark gold with a full, white foam head. Big herbal hop nose, lemon, flowers. Medium to big sweet flavor with heavy florals, grass, herbs and lemon rind. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Grassy, lightly grating finish with dirty flowers, herbs and some oily lemon. It’s quite floral. I think I would have enjoyed this more had I not drank 15+ beers before it. At this point in the evening, it was a touch too heavy. Still good stuff, though.

THE Sour and Saison tasting. One for the road courtesy of Leighton - cheers mate - was seeking this one out. Clear amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Light palate, crispy. Soft creamy malt with that lovely rye spice. Great hops - deep and rich and marmaladey. The lemon is there and provides extra dimension and citric bitterness. Finishes smooth. Great stuff! 4.0

Craft Clerkenwell. Bottle shared with Frederic, Chris and Dan. Hazy orange - amber beer. Little white head. Palate is light and soft. Lovely floral lemon and not too acid at all. Nice undertone of rich marmalade hops. Finishes with more lovely lemon tang and floralness. Really good idea and superbly executed. Hides the abv very well.

Tap at the Stagshead. Nose of lemony citrus and earthy quality. tastes of lemon bitterness, rye grains, earth, floral, other tropical fruits, resin, and spruce. quite a bit of alcohol on the end that leaves taste in mouth. allright
